History
Established in 2008, BBS is a burundian mixed-ownership telecommunication company. Five shareholders created it: ONATEL SP, U-COM Burundi SA, AFRICEL SA, ECONET WIRELESS BURUNDI SA, and CBINET SA. The company operates as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). It holds a telecommunications infrastructure license granted by Decree No. 100/316 on December 3, 2012. BBS became operational in 2013 using funding from the World Bank, shareholders' contributions, and a loan from the Trade and Development Bank (TDB).
Initially, BBS had a total of 12 employees. However, with the company’s expansion and the creation of additional positions, the number of employees increased significantly. In June 2024, BBS had 116 employees, of whom 70% were men and 30% were women and all of whom were Burundian nationals.
Today, BBS is a major telecommunications operator in Burundi, offering very-high-speed Internet services to businesses, institutions, individuals and other telecommunications operators.
The company has played a highly strategic role at the national level in improving access to the Internet and telecommunications services in Burundi. These services include Internet access, data transmission, network security, server hosting, server colocation, web hosting and professional email services.
With the aim of increasing its performance and improving the quality of its services, BBS has diversified its services by establishing a data center, as well as related services such as network optimisation and its expansion.
BBS operates its activities through its own infrastructure, located in various regions of the country.
